I want to start training Bailey in night alerting but first I must do some preparation training that is found to be instrumental in achieving reliable night and day time alerts. This involves introducing the scent source when Bailey is immersed in a game of tug. So, today whilst playing this game, I waved the hidden scent source over his head once and quickly placed it behind my back. He immediately stopped the game and searched for the scent behind my back. I then asked him for the alert signal and he promptly sat, bumped my leg and when I asked ''What's up?'', he pawed my leg. I'm really impressed with his quick response. I am supposed to continue the game and repeat the process several times but he was so immersed in the finding where the scent was, that he refused to take the game any further!
I have also recently applied the training principles learnt for low alerts, to train Bailey to signal a high. So instead of Bailey pawing Jason's or my hand for a low, he is being trained to lie in a drop position to signal when his BGL's are high.
I am also continuing to train him in additional skills related to Jason's care and am very fortunate to have the on-going support and guidance of a wonderful lady who is an expert in this field.
