School holidays always provide many training opportunities, so we finally got out to enjoy some slightly warmer spring weather as we work on Bailey's focus on Jason when out. Bailey has an outgoing personality so whenever he sees another human or dog he tends to get a little excited. And he does tend to draw a lot of attention from people when we're out which just compounds the problem. But I've been asking him to "Watch Me" whenever we walk past someone and I've noticed a huge difference in his behaviour. He learnt this basic command as a pup during his diabetic alert dog training course. It teaches a dog to focus on you and look to you for direction whenever you say these two magic words. And this the perfect situation to use it in. Instead of getting all worked up, he stops immediately, looks me in the eye and focuses his attention on me instead of anyone else. As we proceed to walk on he settles himself and ignores the potential distraction. Without Bailey's total focus on Jason when they're out in public together, he won't be able to alert Jason if need be. Jason also practised this command when needed whilst walking with him which helped to keep him calm.
